Unfortunately, there is not a week that goes by that something shocking is not happening within CUSD. Something that makes one ponder, what CUSD’s priorities are? and what the Board thinks its job is? Even, where are the adults in the room?
The Coronado Eagle has published September 28 via the school newspaper, The CHS Islander Times, an article on an activist librarian who thinks it is appropriate to celebrate banned books. We now have a staff member who thinks their job is to put sexually explicit obscene material on display at the school library in order to in her words “inspire someone to pick one up.”
A library is physically limited in the number of books it can hold. We hire librarians to manage the quantity and quality of reading material. If a librarian cannot exercise sound judgment by determining what is appropriate for the community she serves, then why do we need a librarian? If your next-door neighbor handed Two Boys Kissing or Beyond Magenta or This One Summer (three of six books with Caution tape around them to make it more enticing) to your son/daughter would you be happy about it? Common sense folks, CUSD respect Parent’s values. Downright strange and disturbing that a librarian thinks that is her job.
Community members should determine what books are on display? For instance, This One Summer is a graphic novel, hardly an example of literary excellence. Community members should write Karin Mellina, the CHS Principal at the following email [email protected] if they think it is appropriate for a librarian to specifically target students with controversial material or push an ideology.
